FX has unveiled the chilling first official trailer for ‘Grotesquerie,’ the latest horror drama series from Ryan Murphy, set to premiere on September 25 at 10 p.m. ET/PT. The series stars Niecy Nash-Betts as Detective Lois Tryon, a woman grappling with a supernatural evil threatening her small town.
In the trailer, Nash-Betts opens with the ominous line, “It’s like God left the keys to the candy store to the Devil,” setting the tone for the eerie and suspenseful narrative that follows. Her character, Detective Tryon, is investigating a series of gruesome crimes that she believes are a sign of “the end of time.” These crimes include a “mass cult death” that claimed the lives of 27 people, a chilling mystery that she describes as “the worst thing you could never unsee.”
Joining Nash-Betts in this dark thriller is NFL star Travis Kelce, making his series debut in a still-undisclosed role. Kelce introduces the trailer with a hint of mystery, saying, “Check out the trailer for FX’s ‘Grotesquerie.’ That’s right, you might see some familiar faces.” The trailer also showcases Micaela Diamond as Sister Megan Duval, a nun and journalist with a keen interest in cults and rituals. Detective Tryon and Sister Megan form an unlikely partnership as they dive deeper into the sinister web of clues that hint at a malevolent force at play.
Courtney B. Vance stars as Lois’ husband, Marshall Tryon, who is in long-term hospital care, while Raven Goodwin plays her daughter Merritt, whose strained relationship with her mother adds another layer of tension to the story. Lesley Manville appears as Nurse Redd, who eerily admits, “I get a shiver in my quiver just thinking about it,” adding to the unsettling atmosphere of the series.
Directed by Murphy and co-created with Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken, ‘Grotesquerie’ promises to explore the darker sides of human nature and faith. As Detective Tryon wrestles with the belief that the world is succumbing to evil, Sister Megan still holds onto hope for humanity’s capacity for good. Their investigation leads them into a labyrinth of religious and cult-like iconography, suggesting that the lines between good and evil are more blurred than they appear.
The ensemble cast also includes Nicholas Alexander Chavez as Father Charlie Mayhew, who shares an increasingly complex relationship with Sister Megan, hinting at both spiritual and forbidden themes. As the series unfolds, viewers can expect a mix of supernatural horror, personal drama, and twisted mysteries that are hallmarks of Murphy’s signature style.
‘Grotesquerie’ premieres with its first two episodes on Wednesday, September 25, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX, with streaming available the next day on Hulu and internationally on Disney+.
