ABC Gives Series Order to Fourth ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Spinoff, This Time Set in Texas

Shonda Rhimes and current showrunner Meg Marinis co-create the rural medical drama, set to premiere in midseason 2027

According to Deadline, The Grey’s Anatomy universe is heading to Texas. ABC has given a straight-to-series order to an untitled spinoff co-created by franchise creator Shonda Rhimes and current Grey’s showrunner Meg Marinis, with the series set to premiere in midseason 2027.

The order also marks the first time Rhimes has written or co-written a Grey’s Anatomy franchise episode since the Season 11 episode in which Derek Shepherd died.

Described as “an edgy drama about a team at a West Texas rural medical center — the last chance for care before miles of nowhere,” the spinoff marks the fourth series in the Grey’s Anatomy franchise, following the mothership, Private Practice, and Station 19. It is the first not set on the West Coast or in a major city, and the first to be built around an entirely new group of characters rather than spinning off an existing series regular.

Ellen Pompeo, who stars in and executive produces Grey’s Anatomy, will also executive produce the new series. Rhimes and Betsy Beers also serve as executive producers alongside Marinis. The series is produced by Shondaland and 20th Television.

While the spinoff centers on new characters, it is expected to maintain connections to the Grey’s universe, with Debbie Allen’s Catherine Fox among those potentially appearing.

The spinoff will likely share ABC’s Thursday 10 p.m. time slot with the mothership, with Grey’s Anatomy airing in the fall and the new series following in midseason. With the pickup, ABC has now expanded all three of its longest-running dramas into franchises within the span of a year, joining 9-1-1: Nashville and the upcoming The Rookie: North.
