ABC is keeping the 9-1-1 franchise alive and well—this time, with a Southern twist. The network has officially ordered 9-1-1: Nashville, marking the third installment in the high-stakes first responder series.
The announcement comes just weeks after 9-1-1: Lone Star wrapped its five-season run on Fox. But instead of Texas, the franchise’s next chapter is heading to the heart of Tennessee.
As with its predecessors, 9-1-1: Nashville will be produced by 20th Television and Ryan Murphy Television. Ryan Murphy, Tim Minear, and Rashad Raisani are on board as executive producers and writers, with franchise staple Brad Falchuk also executive producing. And in a move that should excite longtime 9-1-1 fans, Angela Bassett—who not only stars in the flagship series but has been a driving force behind its success—will also serve as an EP on the new show.
The idea for a third 9-1-1 spinoff has been floating around for a while. Initially, Las Vegas was on the table as a potential setting. Last fall, Murphy confirmed that he and Minear were actively developing a new series, and for a brief moment, Hawaii was in the mix. However, high production costs made it a tough sell. Eventually, Nashville emerged as the front-runner, helped in part by a tax incentive that sweetened the deal.
Unlike Atlanta or Memphis, which have been featured prominently in TV and film, Nashville hasn’t been used as a primary backdrop for many series outside of ABC’s country music drama Nashville. That’s about to change.
With 9-1-1 currently in its eighth season and looking strong for a renewal, ABC could end up airing three Ryan Murphy shows in 2025-26 if both 9-1-1 and new medical drama Doctor Odyssey move forward.
As for 9-1-1: Nashville, expect the same mix of high-intensity rescues and personal drama that’s made the franchise a hit. Casting details and additional updates are still under wraps, but with a straight-to-series order locked in, it won’t be long before ABC unveils more about the new first responder squad holding it down in Music City.
