Amazon MGM Studios Developing Biopic on First Black Player to Sign a NFL Contract, Kenny Washington — La Monte Edwards to Pen Script

Kenny Washington biopic

Amazon MGM Studios has announced the development of an untitled biopic about Kenny Washington, the trailblazing athlete who became the first Black player in the NFL in modern era. The film will chronicle Washington’s journey, highlighting his triumphs and struggles leading up to his historic debut with the Los Angeles Rams. The screenplay is being written by La Monte Edwards, with production led by Adam Scott Epstein under his Comet Company banner, Cottrell B. Guidry through Stay Cool Productions, and Evan Silverberg, Darin Friedman, and Guymon Casady of Entertainment 360. Executive producers include Ryan Rottman, Nate Raabe, and New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers through their Awkward Handshake production company.

Kenny Washington’s groundbreaking story predates Jackie Robinson’s iconic entry into Major League Baseball. As a star running back at UCLA, Washington shattered the NFL’s color barrier when he joined the LA Rams, making a significant impact both on and off the field. Despite enduring five knee surgeries, Washington played three seasons in the NFL, maintaining an impressive average of 6.1 yards per carry. He still holds the Rams’ record for the longest run from scrimmage with a 92-yard dash in 1947.

Washington’s journey to the NFL was marked by significant challenges. After being excluded from the league due to racial discrimination, he joined the LAPD and played for the Hollywood Bears in minor league football. However, his fortunes changed when the Cleveland Rams moved to Los Angeles in 1946. With the support of LA Sentinel sports writer Halley Harding and other Black journalists, Washington secured a tryout with the Rams. Despite resistance from other NFL owners who wanted to maintain the ban on Black players, the Rams recognized Washington’s exceptional talent and signed him. This pivotal moment paved the way for other teams to integrate, transforming the NFL into America’s most popular and profitable professional sport.

The film rights were acquired by Guidry and Epstein from Washington’s daughter and grandchildren, who have maintained a strong connection with the Rams.

La Monte Edwards, who previously worked on NBC’s “Chicago Med” and is currently on the team for Starz’s “Power Book IV: Force,” is penning the script. Edwards is also developing the family crime drama “American Savage” with CBS Studios and Uzo Aduba, and an Entourage-style comedy set in the sports world with Entertainment 360 and Propagate.

The Kenny Washington biopic promises to be a compelling portrayal of a sports legend who not only excelled on the field but also played a vital role in the civil rights movement, setting the stage for the integration of professional sports in America.
