Ayo Edebiri Joins Voice Cast of Bong Joon Ho’s First Animated Film ‘Ally’

Oscar-winning filmmaker Bong Joon Ho (Parasite, Mickey 17) is officially stepping into the world of animation with Ally, and he’s bringing an all-star cast with him.

The highly anticipated animated feature has added Ayo Edebiri, Bradley Cooper, Dave Bautista, Finn Wolfhard, Rachel House, Werner Herzog, and newcomer Alex Jayne Go to its voice lineup.

Co-written by Bong and filmmaker Jason Yu, Ally follows a curious piglet squid living deep beneath the South Pacific Ocean. Dreaming of one day seeing the sun and becoming the star of a wildlife documentary, Ally’s peaceful underwater world is disrupted when a mysterious aircraft crashes into the ocean.

The incident sends Ally on an unexpected journey to the surface alongside a group of unlikely companions. Inspired by real marine creatures, the film is described as a heartfelt family adventure blending humor, emotion, friendship, and courage with large-scale underwater action sequences.

The project marks Bong’s first animated feature and has reportedly been in development since 2019. Animation is being handled by DNEG, the Oscar-winning VFX and animation studio behind films like Dune and Inception. The creative team also includes animation supervisor Jae Hyung Kim (Toy Story 4, Inside Out), supervising producer David Lipman from the Shrek franchise, and Klaus production designer Marcin Jakubowski.

The film reunites Bong with Neon, which will distribute Ally in North America following the success of Parasite. International distribution will be handled by Pathé, CJ ENM, and Penture Invest across various territories.

Frequent Bong collaborator Seo Woo-sik is producing the feature, which is targeting completion in the first half of 2027 before a theatrical release later that year.

For Ayo Edebiri, the project adds another major title to an already stacked slate as the Emmy-winning actress continues expanding her film career following breakout success on The Bear.
