17 Black Directors, 30 Films Who’ve Crossed $100M Domestically at the Box Office

UPDATED April 2026

For decades, Black filmmakers have been told their stories don’t travel, their budgets don’t justify the returns, or their names can’t carry blockbusters. Time and time again, they’ve proven that narrative wrong—with receipts to match.

This week, that legacy grows once again as Tyree Dillihay joins an increasingly rare group of filmmakers after GOAT officially crossed the $100 million domestic box office mark. With this milestone, Dillihay becomes the 19th Black director in history to reach this benchmark, further reinforcing the continued commercial impact of Black storytellers across theatrical releases.

As the film continues its global run, GOAT—an original animated feature—adds to a growing list of projects proving that audiences are showing up for fresh concepts, new worlds, and original storytelling beyond franchise filmmaking.

As we celebrate this achievement, we recognize the Black directors whose work has surpassed the $100 million domestic threshold, paving the way for diverse stories to thrive and expand within mainstream cinema.
