Clement Virgo’s ‘Brother’ Starring Lamar Johnson, Aaron Pierre and More Gets US Release Date

Clement Virgo’s feature film, “Brother,” which premiered at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival is headed to the US as Vertical has secured U.S. distribution rights. Starring Lamar Johnson, Aaron Pierre, Marsha Stephanie Blake, and Kiana Madeira, the drama explores themes of masculinity, family, race, and identity.

The film revolves around Francis and Michael, played by Pierre and Johnson, who are the sons of Caribbean immigrants growing up in Toronto’s early hip hop scene of the 90s. A mystery unfolds during the sweltering summer of 1991, and escalating tensions set off a series of events that change the course of the brothers’ lives forever. ‘Brother’ crafts a timely story about the profound bond between siblings, the resilience of community and the irrepressible power of music.

Clement Virgo, the director and writer, adapted the screenplay from David Chariandy’s novel of the same name. The cast also includes Marsha Stephanie Blake and Kiana Madeira.

Vertical’s acquisition demonstrates their commitment to showcasing unique and thought-provoking stories. The filmmakers are thrilled to collaborate with Vertical for the U.S. release and are eager to introduce “Brother” to American audiences this summer.

The film was highly praised during its debut at TIFF, with critics lauding its emotional impact and compelling performances. Damon D’Oliveira, Sonya Di Rienzo, Clement Virgo, and Aeschylus Poulos produced the movie, with Aaron L. Gilbert, Laurie May, Noah Segal, and Steven Thibault serving as executive producers.
