CNN Renews ‘Have I Got News For You’ Hosted by Roy Wood Jr. for Season 5

Roy Wood Jr. is sticking with the headlines — and the punchlines. CNN has officially renewed Have I Got News For You for a fifth season, bringing back Wood Jr. alongside team captains Amber Ruffin and Michael Ian Black for another round of political satire and chaotic news commentary.

The new season is set to premiere September 12 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on CNN, with episodes also streaming on HBO Max, CNN’s streaming platforms, the CNN app, and CNN.com.

Produced by Hat Trick Productions, the series is based on the long-running British panel show of the same name, which has aired for more than 70 seasons on the BBC. The American adaptation debuted in 2024 and has quietly become one of CNN’s strongest original entertainment performers.

In a joint statement, Wood Jr., Ruffin, and Black joked, “We’re thrilled to return for Season 5 and continue covering the nation’s most important stories, most of which still sound made up.”

The series blends politics, pop culture, and current events into a fast-paced comedy panel format where guests compete in news-related games while delivering some of the week’s sharpest commentary. What separates the show from traditional cable news programming is its willingness to lean fully into absurdity — especially during a news cycle that often feels stranger than fiction.

And audiences have clearly responded.

According to Nielsen data, Season 4 averaged 1.06 million viewers in the P2+ category, marking a 246% increase from CNN’s prior four-week average in the timeslot. Among adults 25-54, the series averaged 172,000 viewers, up 153% from the previous season and outperforming its lead-in programming by 47%.

The show has also become a strong streaming performer, regularly landing in HBO Max’s Top 10 following new episode drops.

CNN executive Amy Entelis praised the series’ growth, saying the show has become “a standout performer across CNN’s platforms and a meaningful part of the weekly conversation online.”

At a time when cable news networks are still trying to figure out how to engage younger audiences, Have I Got News For You feels like one of CNN’s clearest wins. Airing on Saturday nights — traditionally considered a dead zone for cable news — the series has managed to build a loyal audience by turning political exhaustion into comedy.

Season 4 featured an eclectic lineup of guests including Adam Schiff, Hasan Minhaj, Andy Richter, Kara Swisher, Ari Shapiro, Larry Wilmore, Bomani Jones, and Nimesh Patel.

The series was even temporarily preempted during breaking international news coverage earlier this year, highlighting the strange balancing act of producing satire in real time while actual world events continue unfolding.

The renewal also continues a major run for Roy Wood Jr., whose post-Daily Show era has quickly evolved into one of the most interesting pivots in political comedy. Between stand-up, hosting, and now anchoring one of CNN’s most talked-about originals, Wood Jr. has carved out a lane that blends sharp cultural commentary with mainstream accessibility.

Meanwhile, the show’s companion podcast, Have I Got News for Your Ears, hosted by Black, continues releasing weekly episodes every Wednesday.

For CNN, renewing Have I Got News For You may be less about comedy and more about strategy. In a fragmented media landscape where viewers increasingly want news packaged with personality, satire may be one of the network’s strongest tools for keeping audiences engaged.
