After nearly “breaking the internet” with a statement that many took as confirmation of his retirement, Denzel Washington has clarified his intentions for the future. In an interview with Seasoned Buzzfeed, the two-time Academy Award winner addressed his misunderstood remarks, explaining that he’s not stepping away from acting entirely—but rather shifting his focus.
“I didn’t say I was gonna go into retirement,” Washington clarified. “I said that it has to be a level of interest to me. I’m more interested in getting behind the camera… So that’s about five years out.” He added, “I may have used the word ‘retire,’ but I look at life in three sections: you learn, you earn, and you return. I’m in the return part of life.” Washington’s comments reflect a desire to continue contributing to the industry in a way that feels meaningful, acknowledging that his priorities have evolved with age.

Washington also reflected on a recent three-week tour with his children, as well as his experience working with colleagues like actors Paul Mescal and Fred Hechinger in his latest project. “They’re taking over,” he noted with humor, emphasizing that he’s ready to pass the torch. “I’m less interested in running and jumping… let Paul and John David [Washington] run and jump. To think, ‘Oh, I can still do it’… you’re a fool, and I don’t want to be foolish.”
In a recent conversation with Today Show Australia while promoting Gladiator II, Washington expanded on his perspective about the later stages of his career. “I’m only interested in working with the best,” Washington, 69, shared. “I don’t know how many more films I’m going to make—probably not that many. I want to do things I haven’t done.”
Washington’s upcoming roles reflect his dedication to new artistic challenges. His lineup includes ambitious projects like adaptations of Othello, Hannibal, and King Lear, along with a collaboration with director Steve McQueen. Most notably, he confirmed a role in Black Panther 3, with writer-director Ryan Coogler already developing a part specifically for him.
With this clarifying statement, Washington’s fans can rest assured: he’s not retiring, just evolving.
