‘Furious’ Trailer: Emmy Rossum Hunts a Calculating Serial Killer in Elizabeth Meriwether’s Dark Crime Thriller

What is the difference between right and wrong? For FBI agent Alice Black (Emmy Rossum), the answer becomes increasingly unstable in “Furious,” a new crime thriller that follows a federal agent searching for a murderer while also confronting questions about her own identity. Quincy Tyler Bernstine, Lola Petticrew, Scoot McNairy, and Jake Lacy co-star.

The series centers on Black as she pursues a calculating female serial killer, with both women soon set on a collision course that will alter not only their lives but also those of everyone in their orbit. The official synopsis reads: “Furious follows FBI agent Alice Black on the hunt for a mysterious and calculating female serial killer. Both walk their own paths toward justice, and as their lives start to intertwine, the line between right and wrong begins to blur.”

The new trailer opens with the killer having an unsettling exchange with a dying man, telling him, “I don’t like the sound you’re making, but I love your smile.” Rossum’s Agent Black is later shown arriving at a crime scene to investigate, realizing she’s dealing with a serial killer. As the trailer lays out, “Female killers know their victims. They kill for power, control,” and Black comes to believe the murders are “payback.” The footage also shows the killer attacking a man she says she met when she was 15.

Elizabeth Meriwether writes and executive produces the project, marking a significant tonal departure for the multi-hyphenate best known for creating the beloved comedy series “New Girl,” as well as her work on “The Dropout,” “Dying for Sex,” and the screenplay for 2011’s “No Strings Attached.” Brian Kirk directs and executive produces the first two episodes, following his work on “Penny Dreadful,” “Game of Thrones,” and “The Day of the Jackal.” Emmy Rossum leads the series as the conflicted Alice Black and also serves as an executive producer through her Composition 8 banner, alongside Ronald Bass, Matt Olmstead, and Sam Hoffman.

“Furious” debuts on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ with a three-episode premiere on July 27. New episodes will roll out weekly on Mondays, with the season finale set for Aug. 31.
