Gene “Groove” Allen, the rapper and actor best known for his roles in the House Party films and as a member of the rap group Groove B. Chill, has passed away at 63, according to TMZ. The Bronx native rose to prominence in the early 1990s, leaving an indelible mark on both hip-hop and film.
Groove B. Chill, which also featured Daryl “Chill” Mitchell and Belal “DJ Belal” Miller, gained notoriety with their 1990 album Starting From Zero, which included their hit single “Hip-Hop Music.” On-screen, Allen had a memorable role in House Party (1990) and its sequel House Party 2 (1991). His brief but impactful cameo in What’s Love Got to Do with It? (1993), the Tina Turner biopic starring Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne, further cemented his presence in pop culture.
The hip-hop community has been mourning his loss and celebrating his legacy. Eric B., of the legendary duo Eric B. & Rakim, shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram:
“Got a call from my brother Chill that his brother Groove passed away. Dam, rest in peace brother Groove. We will continue to celebrate your life. Let the house party continue on. Thanks for the great music and movie moments.”
Producer DJ Premier added his condolences in a comment on the post: “My condolences. Loved their music on Uptown and his character in House Party as the drunk.” No Limit Records producer KLC also paid tribute, writing, “My condolences. STRENGTH & PRAYERS!!!!”
Allen’s cause of death has not yet been disclosed, but reports indicate he passed away following a medical emergency at his home in Maryland. No foul play is suspected, and his passing came as a shock to his family.
In addition to his music and acting career, Allen dedicated his later years to philanthropic efforts, raising money for military personnel and women’s shelters. He also ventured into voiceover work and podcasting, continuing to inspire with his creative endeavors.
