HBO and Channel 4 have dropped the first official teaser trailer for Get Millie Black, a gritty crime noir from acclaimed Booker Prize-winning author Marlon James. The five-episode limited series, premiering November 25 on HBO and streaming on Max, introduces us to Millie-Jean Black, a Jamaican-born, ex-Scotland Yard detective played by Tamara Lawrance, who returns to her roots in Kingston, Jamaica, to confront a series of haunting cases—and ghosts from her own past.

The plot centers around Millie-Jean’s investigation into missing persons, leading her down a path that forces her to face disturbing realities and test her resilience. When a sibling she can’t save and a child who can’t be found get entangled in her case, Millie is pushed to her limits. “This is just another story from Jamaica. It won’t add up. It won’t make sense… But like every story about this country, this is a ghost story,” Millie says in the trailer’s voiceover, setting a tense and mysterious tone. Through a sequence of blood-stained scenes and sharp contrasts of Jamaica’s vibrance with its harsh realities, the trailer reveals that this isn’t just another detective drama—it’s a journey into a deeply complex place and a complex woman’s world.
Joining Lawrance is an ensemble cast that includes Game of Thrones actor Joe Dempsie as Scotland Yard detective Luke Holborn, Gershwyn Eustache Jnr, Chyna McQueen as Hibiscus, Nestor Aaron Absera as Corsica, and Peter John Thwaites as Freddie Summerville. As Millie navigates the layered investigation, she crosses paths with Holborn, igniting a conflict that threatens to blow both their worlds apart. The trailer’s quick-cut shots tease confrontations, tension-filled dialogues, and glimpses into Kingston’s underbelly, suggesting an unfiltered portrayal of Jamaica unlike what we typically see on screen.
Produced by Motive Pictures for HBO and Channel 4, Get Millie Black brings together an impressive creative team under James’s lead. This is James’s first foray into television after his 2015 Man Booker Prize-winning novel, A Brief History of Seven Killings. Jami O’Brien, Simon Maxwell, and Leopoldo Gout serve as executive producers, with Tanya Hamilton as the lead director and co-executive producer. Directors Annetta Laufer and Jean Lucky Herbulot also bring their vision to the screen, enhancing the series’ storytelling depth.
Lawrance has previously shared her excitement about portraying Jamaica “in ways that it hasn’t been seen on international television before,” promising audiences a fresh perspective on her homeland. Get Millie Black intertwines crime, family, and identity against a hauntingly beautiful yet turbulent Jamaican backdrop, making it a series to watch this November.
