The second annual HBCU First Look Film Festival is set to make a powerful return this November, offering an exciting mix of screenings, panel discussions, networking, and exclusive career-building opportunities for students and aspiring filmmakers. Running from November 8 – 10 at Howard University, the festival promises an unparalleled experience for attendees, bridging the gap between HBCU talent and Hollywood’s biggest names, and solidifying its place as a must-attend event for aspiring filmmakers, industry insiders, and students from historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs).
The 2024 festival will center around the theme, “A Celebration of Black Cinema X Activism,” honoring the intersection of film and social change. From industry pioneers to emerging HBCU talent, the festival will spotlight individuals and projects that continue to shape entertainment while championing activism and representation.
Building on the momentum of last year’s inaugural event—which featured a surprise appearance by Barack and Michelle Obama, along with a screening of Rustin—the HBCU First Look Film Festival is back with an even more robust lineup and exclusive events in its second year.
The festival will feature opening and closing night films, panel discussions with entertainment leaders, and will announce three grand prize winners of the HBCU First Look Film Challenge. Attendees will also enjoy the HBCU First Look Film Marathon, showcasing 65 student films.
This year’s festival will kick off with a keynote conversation featuring Naturi Naughton-Lewis, star of Power. Returning for the second year, comedian and actress Loni Love will moderate the festival, reprising her role after last year’s successful debut. Naughton-Lewis will share her insights on “Power, Passion, and Perseverance,” reflecting on her experiences in the entertainment industry.
A standout event will be the exclusive Artist Residency Masterclass hosted by acclaimed writer-director David E. Talbert. Known for films like Jingle Jangle and Almost Christmas, Talbert’s masterclass offers attendees an intimate look into his creative process. While the event is included with festival admission, those interested must RSVP, making it one of the hottest tickets at this year’s festival.
Honorees at this year’s AARP ‘My HBCU Joy’ Awards Luncheon include actress Keshia Knight-Pulliam, entertainment executive Stacy Milner (HBCU Los Angeles), and philanthropist TeeJ Mercer (Move-In Day Mafia), all recognized for their work and contributions.
Closing the festival will be “Closing Night at the Movies: Exclusive Clip & Conversation with The Honorable: Shyne Documentary,” providing a special look at the project.
A Premier Networking Opportunity
One of the defining features of the HBCU First Look Film Festival is its emphasis on career development and networking. The Career & Vendor Lounge presented by HBCYOU and P&G provides students a unique chance to engage with industry professionals beyond the panels and screenings. It’s an opportunity for in-depth conversations and career-building advice.
For undergraduate students aiming to break into the film and television industry, the Beyond The Lights Career Lounge offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to showcase their work, ask questions, and connect with influential Hollywood figures. Open throughout the three-day event, it will feature entertainment professionals and vendors, providing one-on-one conversations, networking opportunities, and career guidance.
