Hulu just hit “send” on something spicy.
The streamer has officially ordered a pilot for Group Chat, a satirical comedy fronted by La La Anthony, who also serves as executive producer alongside Kenya Barris (black-ish) and her longtime friend, Kim Kardashian.
The series has been simmering since summer 2024, when it first landed at Hulu as part of Kardashian’s first-look deal with 20th Television. Now it’s moving forward as her first official project under that multi-year agreement—and it’s bringing all the drama (and then some).
So what’s Group Chat really about?
Loosely inspired by La La Anthony’s bestselling book The Love Playbook: Rules for Love, Sex, and Happiness, the show centers around five fabulous, successful women in their forties who’ve made it big in LA. On the outside, they’re giving luxury, confidence, and control. But behind closed doors—more specifically, in their private group chat—there’s a whole other side. Unfiltered truths, real-life mess, and the kind of tea that doesn’t make it to the brunch table.
Basically, if you’ve ever dropped a “girl, guess what just happened” in your group thread… this show gets you.
The Power Trio Behind the Series
This isn’t just a flashy celeb collab. All three executive producers are bringing receipts.
La La Anthony has been stacking wins both on-screen and off. From Power to BMF to appearances in Barris’ grown-ish and Netflix’s You People, she stays booked. Her debut book, The Love Playbook, which inspired the show, was a New York Times bestseller—and she followed it up with The Power Playbook, flexing both her storytelling and business savvy.
Kenya Barris is no stranger to culturally resonant content. After redefining modern Black family sitcoms with black-ish, grown-ish, and mixed-ish, he’s kept the momentum going with Diarra From Detroit (BET+), The Vince Staples Show (Netflix), and You People, which he wrote and directed. The man knows how to make content that sticks.
Then there’s Kim Kardashian. Fresh off her acting debut in American Horror Story: Delicate, Kim’s been stacking executive producer credits faster than a flash sale sells out. She’s got the Ryan Murphy legal drama All’s Fair on the way, the Netflix drama Calabasas (with Emma Roberts), and even films at Netflix and Amazon MGM in the pipeline. Group Chat marks her first foray into comedy production—and something tells us she’s not playing around.
The Set-Up Behind the Scenes
Group Chat is being produced by 20th Television (under Disney TV Studios) in collaboration with BET Studios, where Barris is a principal partner. Kardashian and Anthony are both repped by WME, while Barris is repped by WME, Artists First, and attorney Gregg Gellman at Morris Yorn.
This move also fits Hulu’s recent push into live-action comedy. The platform just launched Mid-Century Modern last week and has another pilot, Phony starring Connie Britton, still in the mix.
Bottom line: With this kind of talent behind the scenes, and a story that hits on friendship, aging, image, and the reality behind perfection—we’re expecting Group Chat to bring the kind of heat that’ll have folks quoting one-liners before the pilot even finishes.
So go ahead and silence the group chat notifications. Hulu’s about to give you the full story.
