Idris Elba joins the cast of Paramount’s Sonic The Hedgehog 2 as the famed character of Knuckles the Echinda. He joins Ben Schwartz, who is reprising his role as Sonic in the first film. James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, and Jim Carrey are also returning as well as director Jeff Fowler.
According to a leaked synopsis:
After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is ready for more freedom, and Tom and Maddie agree to leave him home when they go on vacation. But, no sooner are they gone, when Dr. Robotnik (Carrey) comes back, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to both build and destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his old sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.
Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, Shemar Moore is also cast.
Knuckles is a red Echidna and he’s the guardian of the Master Emerald in the videogames. He first appeared as an antagonist in the 1994 Sega video game “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” tricked by the evil Doctor Robotnik into thinking that Sonic is his enemy, He later became a playable character in a follow-up game “Sonic and Knuckles.” He is also known to be hot-headed and a fighter.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will also feature Miles “Tails” Prower (who appeared in a post-credit scene in the first film).
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is set to hit theaters on April 8th, 2022.
Elba’s film Suicide Squad is currently in theaters and up next he will star in Netflix’s The Harder They Fall. As well as Universal/Will Packer’s Beast and George Miller’s Three Thousand Years of Longing.
