Idris Elba is reprising his role as DCI John Luther for the film continuation of the BBC One series Luther. The film, titled Luther: The Fallen Sun is scheduled to be released in March 2023, by Netflix.

Elba stars as Luther, a brilliant detective who always seems to be walking the line between serving justice and breaking the law himself.

In Luther: The Fallen Sun — an epic continuation of the award-winning television saga reimagined for film — a gruesome serial killer is terrorizing London while brilliant but disgraced detective John Luther (Idris Elba) sits behind bars. Haunted by his failure to capture the cyber psychopath who now taunts him, Luther decides to break out of prison to finish the job by any means necessary. The film also stars Cynthia Erivo, Andy Serkis and Dermot Crowley, who returns as Martin Schenk.

Neil Cross, the series creator, is writing the movie and Jamie Payne is directing. Cynthia Erivo, Andy Serkis, Jess Liaudin, and Dermot Crowley as DSU Martin Schenk will star alongside Elba.

Elba and Cross are producing alongisde Peter Chernin, David Ready, and Jenno Topping. Kris Thykier, Priscilla Paris, Brendan Ferguson, Miki Emmrich, and Dan Finlay are executive producing the film. Luther is a British psychological crime thriller that ran for five seasons from 2010 to 2019.
