The remake of Faces of Death is currently being filmed in Louisiana and directed by Daniel Goldhaber, who co-wrote the screenplay with Isa Mazzei. The filmmakers have hinted that the new film will update the original story by focusing on viral videos rather than the bootleg VHS tapes that inspired the original.

The actual plot however is being kept under wraps as well as character details.

The original controversial 1978 film, directed by John Alan Schwartz, featured Michael Carr portraying pathologist Francis B. Gross and presented new footage as “real” footage of actual deaths or the immediate aftermath, along with some actual death footage. It was banned in over 50 countries but spawned a franchise of sequels and imitators. While the new version is expected to omit actual death footage, it could still be just as disturbing if executed well.

The movie’s production team includes executive producer Isa Mazzei, Rick Benattar, Susan Montford, Don Murphy, Greg Gilreath, Adam Hendricks, Cory Kaplan, and Derek Bishe.

No release date for the Faces of Death remake has been announced yet.

Fowler’s casting comes just before the release of Lionsgate’s comedy-horror film, The Blackening, hitting theaters on June 16. He can also be heard in Marvel’s new animated series, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. The actor has had other notable roles in CBS’s Superior Donuts and recent films such as Am I OK?, Late Bloomers, and Netflix’s Riverdance: The Animated Adventure.
