In a surprising twist at San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios announced that Robert Downey Jr. will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as the villain Dr. Doom, effectively sidelining Jonathan Majors’ character, Kang the Conqueror. This decision also means that the previously planned ‘Avengers: Kang Dynasty’ has been scrapped, and fans can look forward to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ instead.
When TMZ caught up with Majors in West Hollywood, the actor candidly shared his feelings about the announcement. “Yeah, heartbroken. Of course,” Majors admitted. “I love Kang. Dr. Doom is wicked, though.”
The reporter then brought up the fact that despite their past legal issues, both Robert Downey Jr. and Ezra Miller have been given opportunities to return to their iconic roles. When asked if he felt this was a fair comparison, Majors carefully navigated the sensitive topic. “I think it’s fair that Mr. Downey is being and has been greeted with patience and curiosity and love, and that Mr. Miller has gotten the same treatment,” he said. “And that they’re being allowed to work their art and be creative at that level… I didn’t really get that.”
Pressed further on whether he believed race played a part in the different treatments, Majors refrained from making any direct accusations. “I don’t know,” he replied when asked why he thought he wasn’t given the same opportunities.
Despite the disappointment, Majors expressed his willingness to return to the MCU if the opportunity arose. “Hell yeah! Hell yeah! Hell yeah! I love him. I love Kang. If that’s what the fans want, if that’s what Marvel wants, then let’s roll. Hell yeah.”
Robert Downey Jr.’s return as Dr. Doom is set for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ in 2026 and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ in 2027. Fans are eagerly anticipating Downey’s portrayal of this iconic villain, marking a significant shift in the MCU’s villain roster.
Majors’ arrest in March 2023, involving charges brought by his then-girlfriend Grace Jabbari, led to his conviction on two misdemeanor counts. This resulted in probation and a year-long domestic violence treatment program. Following the verdict, Majors was dropped by his talent manager and publicity firm, marking a significant setback in his career.
As the MCU transitions to new storylines and characters, the legacy of both Kang the Conqueror and Dr. Doom remains pivotal. With the Russo brothers returning to direct and Stephen McFeely penning the scripts, the next phase of the MCU promises to be both thrilling and transformative. Fans will have to wait and see how these developments unfold, but one thing is clear: the excitement and speculation surrounding Marvel’s future are higher than ever.
