GVN Releasing Sets U.S. Premiere for Haitian Political Thriller ‘July 7: Who Killed the President?’ [TRAILER]

GVN Releasing has acquired the rights to July 7: Who Killed the President?, a political thriller set and produced in Haiti, directed by filmmaker Robenson Lauvince. The film will debut in U.S. theaters on May 16, just ahead of Haitian Flag Day on May 18.

Rooted in one of the most significant moments in Haiti’s recent history, the film unpacks the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, who was killed in his Port-au-Prince home on July 7, 2021. The crime shocked the nation and the world, with allegations pointing to a group of foreign mercenaries—many from Colombia—as the orchestrators behind the attack. But beneath the headlines, the story is far more complex.

A Story Told From Within

July 7: Who Killed the President? follows Shedeline, a college student traveling to Haiti to write a memoir on the life of President Moïse. What begins as a research trip quickly evolves into a harrowing firsthand account of the chaos and political unrest triggered by the assassination. As she becomes entangled in the aftermath, she’s forced to confront truths that go beyond the scope of her project—placing her at the center of a mystery that grips the entire nation.

The film stars a talented cast of Haitian actors, including Jimmy Jean-Louis, Raquel Pélissier, Tico Armand, Evens J. Baptiste, Gaelle Edmond, Paul Henry Athis, and Eddy Francois. The screenplay is written by Paul Henry Athis, Gary Victor, and Hollandy Desrosiers, and produced by Clearshot Entertainment in association with Aldea Studio.

A Turning Point for Haitian Cinema

“This film is more than just a political thriller—it’s a truth-telling moment for Haiti,” said Lauvince in a statement. “It’s the first time this story is being told through our eyes, from our perspective, and with the nuance, depth, and dignity it deserves.”

He continued, “For the Haitian community, it’s both a mirror and a megaphone—a reflection of our pain and resilience, and a demand for accountability. I hope this film not only resonates with audiences but also challenges global viewers to consider the value and impact of our stories.”

As Haitian cinema continues to push forward, July 7 stands as both a cultural reckoning and a cinematic milestone—proof that Haitian filmmakers are prepared to lead their own narratives on the world stage.
