Justin Simien’s Horror Satire Film Bad Hair Is Set to Be Released in October

Hulu announced during their New Fronts presentation that Justin Simien’s horror satire, Bad Hair, would be released in October. This premiere is apart of the streaming platform’s Halloween-themed original content, branded as Huluween. As far as the exact release date, Hulu did not disclose that information.

Simien wrote and directed Bad Hair, a horror satire set in 1989. It centers on an ambitious young woman who gets a weave to succeed in the image-obsessed world of music television. However, her flourishing career may come at a high cost when she realizes that her new hair may have a mind of its own.

Elle Lorraine, Vanessa L. Williams, Jay Pharoah, Lena Waithe, Chanté Adams, Blair Underwood, Laverne Cox, James Van Der Beek, Kelly Rowland, and more star in this film.

Julia Lebedev, Angel Lopez, Eddie Vaisman, and Simien produced the film. Bad Hair premiered in January of this year at the Sundance Film Festival. Hulu picked it up for nearly $8 million after its Sundance screening.

Hulu also released the other original projects that will be included in its Huluween strand.

Of those projects are Books of Blood, based on Clive Barker’s multi-volume book series., as well as Marvel Studios’ Helstrom and Mary Laws’ Monsterland.

Books of Bloods will tell three tales from horror author Barker’s multi-volume series of short stories. The film stars Anna Friel, Rafi Gavron, Britt Robertson and Yul Vazquez.

The first story centers on Mary (Frield). She’s a psychologist who has gained fame for debunking theories and beliefs not based in science. Then she meets Simon (Gavron), a man who claims to speak for the 7-year-old son he lost to leukemia. And his claims shaken her current stance.

The next story centers on Jenna (Robertson). She is a hypersensitive girl who suffers from misophonia, an abhorrence of sound. When she learns her mother is about to send her back to “the Farm,” she sets out for Los Angeles.

The last story follows Bennett (Vazquez). He’s a professional killer whose latest target clues him into a priceless book that could allow him and his wife to retire. Bennett’s search for the book leads him into supernatural horror.

Helstrom centers on the son and daughter of a mysterious and powerful serial killer. It follows Daimon (Tom Austen) and Ana Helstrom (Sydney Lemmon), and their complicated dynamic, as they track down the worst of humanity — each with their own attitude and skills.

Monsterland is a horror anthology series that is full of encounters with mermaids, fallen angels, and other strange beasts. It follows broken people driven to desperate acts in an attempt to repair their lives. It ultimately shows there is a thin line between man and monster.

Mike Colter will star in the anthology as Brian in the episode, titled “Newark, New Jersey.” Brian is a grief-stricken husband (Colter) who blames himself after his daughter disappears under his supervision. Guilty and despairing, he refuses to believe she is dead and is unable to move on with his life or be emotionally available to his wife.
