The eagerly awaited second season of Lioness is set to premiere on October 27, 2024, on Paramount+. The new trailer for the espionage thriller, created by Taylor Sheridan, offers a glimpse into the intense drama and high-stakes action that lies ahead. Zoe Saldaña’s voiceover in the trailer asserts, “There’s no such thing as a moral war. There’s survival, and there’s surrender,” setting the tone for a season filled with moral ambiguity and personal sacrifice.
Season two will delve deeper into the complex world of covert operations as the CIA’s fight against terrorism moves closer to home. Saldaña returns as Joe, a dedicated CIA operative leading a team of female agents. This season introduces new dynamics with the addition of Genesis Rodriguez as Captain Josephina “Josie” Carillo, a skilled helicopter pilot whose presence adds fresh challenges and tensions to the team.
The returning cast includes Nicole Kidman as Kaitlyn Meade, Joe’s boss, and Morgan Freeman as Secretary of State Edwin Mullins, whose role is expected to be more prominent this season. Michael Kelly reprises his role as CIA Deputy Director Byron Westfield, and Thad Luckinbill returns as Kyle with an expanded role. Notably, Laysla De Oliveira’s character, Cruz Manuelos, appears to be sidelined, indicating a shift in focus for the new season.
The season’s logline teases a gripping narrative: “As the CIA’s fight against terror moves closer to home, Joe, Kaitlyn, and Byron enlist a new Lioness operative to infiltrate a previously unknown threat. With pressure mounting from all sides, Joe is forced to confront the profound personal sacrifices she has made as the leader of the Lioness program.”
Lioness, which premiered in July 2023, became Paramount+’s most-watched worldwide series premiere, drawing nearly 6 million viewers in its first week. The second season aims to build on this success with its double-episode premiere and subsequent weekly releases.
In addition to Sheridan, Kidman, Freeman and Saldaña, the show’s executive producers include David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari, David Hutkin, Jill Wagner, David Lemanowicz, Geyer Kosinski, Michael Friedman, and Keith Cox. The series is distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution.
