Marcus Scribner (Black-ish) and Maxwell Cunningham (Top Dog) are joining the cast of In Starland, the upcoming indie drama that marks the feature directorial debut of British actor-filmmaker Ray Panthaki. They’ll star alongside Sing Sing breakout Clarence Maclin, who is set to lead the film in what’s being called a powerful and poetic look at middle age, creativity, and human connection.
In Starland follows a man grappling with the emotional weight of small-town life—until a fearless group of young artists crash into his orbit, shifting his perspective and pushing him toward self-discovery. Scribner and Cunningham are part of this dynamic group, each bringing a fresh energy to Panthaki’s introspective tale of generational divides and rapid cultural change.
This casting deepens an already exciting ensemble. Maclin, who stole hearts and headlines in Sing Sing, is making his leading man debut here, fresh off a wave of industry recognition that includes a BAFTA nomination and a Gotham Award win. He recently signed with Gersh, signaling a career on the rise.
Panthaki, known for Boiling Point and The Serpent Queen, co-wrote the screenplay with Jason Kavan, based on a story he’s been developing for years. “This film has been with me for a long time. It’s personal, it’s spiritual, and it’s my way of processing the world around me,” he shared.
He’s also producing the film under his new banner, Le Bateau Lavoir, alongside Daniel Khalili (Trespass Against Us). Emmy-winning producer Daisy Allsop joins through her Archface production company. Production kicks off this month in Mississippi.
Scribner, best known for his long-running role as Andre Jr. on Black-ish and Grown-ish, he’s also appeared in How to Blow Up a Pipeline, Farewell Amor, and How I Learned to Fly.
Cunningham recently wrapped Season 2 of the Swedish crime thriller Top Dog and starred in Netflix’s rom-com One More Time. He’ll next be seen in the upcoming series A Life’s Worth.
