‘Fire Country’ Spinoff: Michele Weaver Joins CBS’ ‘Sheriff Country’

Love Is star Michele Weaver is suiting up and stepping into the badge life in Sheriff Country, the latest Fire Country spinoff headed to CBS for the 2025-26 season.

The upcoming small-town crime drama, led by Morena Baccarin, just added Weaver and Christopher Gorham (Covert Affairs, Ugly Betty) to its series regular cast—and we’re here for it. The show centers on Sheriff Mickey Fox (Baccarin), a no-nonsense law enforcer navigating both criminal cases and personal chaos in Edgewater, a fictional town that’s anything but sleepy. If Mickey’s name sounds familiar, it’s because she’s the stepsister of Sharon Leone (played by Diane Farr), a mainstay from the flagship Fire Country series.

Weaver will play Cassidy, a dedicated deputy who joined law enforcement after being inspired by Mickey’s tough-but-fair leadership. But now that she’s in the field, Cassidy’s learning that living up to a hero is a whole lot harder when the badge is your own.

Gorham, meanwhile, steps in as Travis—Mickey’s ex-husband and an attorney with a complicated co-parenting dynamic. The two still share a connection through their daughter, Skye, who’s worked hard to recover from addiction. The emotional stakes are high, and the chemistry? Well, let’s just say it’s still very much flickering under the surface.

If the name W. Earl Brown rings a bell, it should—he’s set to portray Wes, Mickey’s ex-con father and a secretive marijuana grower who’s carved out a life off-the-grid in the mountains of Edgewater. And yes, his relationship with Mickey is exactly as strained as you’d expect from a dad hiding a weed empire while his daughter wears a badge.

The pilot episode is penned by Fire Country co-creators Tony Phelan and Joan Rater, with a story credit also going to Max Thieriot (who co-created the mothership series and starred in it). Matt Lopez serves as showrunner, with heavy hitters Jerry Bruckheimer and KristieAnne Reed executive producing for JBTV.

For Weaver, this is a welcomed return to series TV. She first captured hearts on OWN’s Love Is and has since flexed her acting range in Briarpatch, Council of Dads, Real Husbands of Hollywood, and even Ahsoka where she played Lieutenant Callahan. On the film side, she held her own opposite Chace Crawford in Nighthawks and co-starred in Illicit alongside Vivica A. Fox and David Ramsey.

As for Gorham, his résumé runs deep—from Netflix’s The Lincoln Lawyer and Insatiable to his iconic turns as Henry Grubstick in Ugly Betty and Auggie in Covert Affairs. Up next, he’s set to star in Tempest, a Korean drama for Disney+ and Hulu, joining John Cho and Jacob Bertrand.

Sheriff Country is currently filming in Toronto and is expected to hit CBS this fall. It joins a growing universe under the Fire Country banner, which was just renewed for Season 4. Meanwhile, other potential CBS spinoffs, including those for The Neighborhood and The Equalizer, have been shelved—so this one’s got a lot riding on it.

But if this cast is any indication, Sheriff Country might just have the firepower to carve out its own legacy.
