UPDATED WITH TRAILER:

Netflix is introducing us to South Africa’s coolest “it girl” with their upcoming comedy, Miseducation. The series is set to premiere September 15th.

The story centers on Mbali, portrayed by Buntu Petse, whose life takes a dramatic turn after police raids her family’s house, leading to the seizure of their assets due to her mother, Brenda Hadebe’s (played by Baby Cele), corrupt political dealings. In the wake of this embarrassment, Mbali seeks solace and reinvention at Grahamstown University in Makhanda, hoping to escape her mother’s corrupt legacy.

However, Mbali’s reinvention strategy is far from ordinary. From driving the campus cab to becoming a guest on the popular campus gossip show, “The Spill,” hosted by the charismatic Raeesah (Nicole Bessick), and even running for Student Representative Council (SRC) President, Mbali’s journey back to the top is both unconventional and inspiring.

Guided by her new misfit squad, Jay (Prev Reddy), and Natalie (Micaela Tucker), Mbali sets out on her SRC campaign, which is fueled by inspiration from campus rowing champion and local heartthrob, Sivu Levine (Lunga Shabalala). However, the path to victory is not without its challenges, as she faces tough competition from the seasoned activist ‘Comrade’ Caesar (Mpho Sebeng) and the enigmatic Hotep theorist, Mubarak (Ebenhaezer Dibakwane).

Mandisa Nduna, Camilla Waldman, Sechaba Ramphele, Luyanda Zwane, and Mamarumo Marokane round out the cast.

“Miseducation” is a collaboration between Netflix and Burnt Onion Productions, the renowned powerhouse behind Africa’s most celebrated festive franchise, “How To Ruin Christmas.” Rethabile Ramaphakela, the creative genius behind “Miseducation” and Burnt Onion’s Creative Director, is thrilled to bring this teen comedy about varsity life to the world. The series delves into the chaos of university life, where anything goes, and growing pains are all too relatable.

Behind the camera, “Miseducation” boasts an impressive team, with directors Catharine Cooke, Themba Mfebe, Lwazi Mvuzi, and Rea Rangaka leading the way. The series is produced by Phuthi Nakene, with creative brilliance provided by headwriter Lwazi Mvusi and a team of talented writers, including Sunni Faba, Tumi Morake, Brad Katzen, and Mojak Lehoko.

With a promise of laughter, friendship, and valuable life lessons, “Miseducation” premieres September 15th. Check out some first look images below.
