The 2026 ESSENCE Festival of Culture will pay tribute to the enduring legacy of late R&B icon Aaliyah with a special performance curated by longtime collaborator and friend Missy Elliott.
Set for Sunday, July 5, at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, the tribute will serve as the centerpiece of ESSENCE Flowers, the festival’s annual Sunday-night celebration honoring artists whose impact continues to shape culture through music, performance, and artistry.
The tribute coincides with the 25th anniversary of Aaliyah’s self-titled final album, a landmark project that helped solidify her status as one of the most influential artists of her generation. Her influence remains evident across music, fashion, visual storytelling, and popular culture, inspiring countless artists who followed in her footsteps.
Missy Elliott, whose creative partnership with Aaliyah produced some of the most memorable music and visuals of the late 1990s and early 2000s, will bring her distinctive vision to the celebration. Their collaborations helped define an era and continue to resonate with audiences decades later.
Aaliyah’s history with the ESSENCE Festival runs deep. She performed at the inaugural festival in 1995, helping establish the event as a premier destination for Black music and culture. Her legacy was also recognized during the festival’s 30th anniversary celebration in 2024.
“In 1995 my sister performed at the inaugural Essence festival alongside an impressive line-up of legendary performers,” said Aaliyah’s brother, Rashad Haughton. “Thirty one years later, I am overcome with gratitude to the founders, artists and the inimitable Missy Elliott for honoring my sister with this tribute, celebrating her life, art and ongoing legacy.”
Festival organizers noted that the tribute has been developed with the support and blessing of Aaliyah’s family, including her mother, Diane Haughton, and Rashad Haughton, ensuring the celebration honors her life and artistry with care and intention.
