Patrick Clanton is stepping into the spotlight at Moulin Rouge! The Musical following Megan Thee Stallion’s earlier-than-expected departure from the Broadway production.
Clanton, who has been serving as standby for Harold Zidler and Toulouse-Lautrec, will temporarily take over the role of Zidler beginning Saturday, May 2, through Sunday, May 17. His run bridges the gap until Eric Anderson returns to the role on May 19.
Megan Thee Stallion, who made her Broadway debut in the production on March 24, played her final performance on May 1—cutting short what was originally scheduled as an eight-week engagement through May 17. In a statement, she expressed gratitude to the cast, crew, and fans, calling the experience “an honor” and praising the company’s dedication and work ethic. No specific reason was given for her early departure.
Her run wasn’t without challenges. The Grammy-winning artist previously missed a performance after falling ill during a March 31 show, later revealing she had been dealing with extreme exhaustion, dehydration, and low metabolic levels. She returned to the stage shortly after.
Despite the shortened run, Megan’s impact was undeniable. Box office grosses surged during her time in the show, with weekly earnings climbing from around $872K pre-arrival to consistently over $1 million, including a high of $1.66 million for the week ending April 19.
Clanton, who made his Broadway debut in Moulin Rouge! in 2022, is no stranger to the production. In addition to his standby duties, his credits include the Tony-winning revival of Oklahoma! (directed by Daniel Fish), as well as School of Rock and Sister Act on tour.
Megan also made history during her run as the first female-identifying performer to take on the role of Zidler in any production of Moulin Rouge! worldwide.
The Tony-winning musical, directed by Alex Timbers, is currently set to close on Broadway August 30 following a recently announced extension.
