NBC Shuffles ‘Grosse Pointe Garden Society’ to Fridays—Is It a Pivot or a Last Stop?

NBC is shaking up its schedule, and that means a new home for Grosse Pointe Garden Society. The network is pulling the freshman drama from its struggling Sunday 10 p.m. slot and replanting it on Fridays at 8 p.m., starting April 4. That’s right—Friday nights, the notorious graveyard shift for network TV. But in the era of streaming, does that still hold true?

For those who haven’t been watching, Grosse Pointe Garden Society is a twisty suburban drama about four garden club members tangled in secrets, scandal, and one very inconvenient murder. As their dark truths fester beneath the surface, they try to keep up appearances—just like the perfectly pruned flowers in their community gardens.

Created by Good Girls duo Jenna Bans and Bill Krebs, the show stars Aja Naomi King, Melissa Fumero, Ben Rappaport, AnnaSophia Robb, Jocko Sims, Matthew Davis, Alexander Hodge, Nancy Travis, and Felix Wolfe.

Grosse Pointe Garden Society, which feels like the perfect show for those who love Desperate Housewives has had a rocky launch. Three episodes in, and it’s already on the move—never a great sign. Ratings-wise, it’s been at the bottom of NBC’s lineup, barely crossing a million same-day viewers in the past two weeks.

Back in the day, a Friday night relocation was a one-way ticket to cancellation, but times have changed. With next-day streaming on Peacock, Grosse Pointe could still find its audience—even if it’s not pulling big numbers on traditional TV.

And here’s where things get interesting. While Grosse Pointe has been floundering in live ratings, it’s been thriving on Peacock. According to TVLine, The pilot episode, which barely scraped together 1.8 million viewers on premiere night, has ballooned to 6.6 million total viewers across all platforms. That’s a huge jump—more than triple its live audience. In the key 18-49 demo, it’s up sevenfold.

Basically, people are watching it, just not on Sundays.

And that’s what makes this move a toss-up. On one hand, Friday at 8 p.m. isn’t exactly prime real estate for a serialized murder mystery. Unlike a light comedy, it’s not the kind of show viewers can casually tune into without getting lost. On the other hand, if its streaming numbers keep climbing, NBC might decide it’s better suited as a Peacock original rather than axing it altogether.

With just a few weeks left on Sundays, Grosse Pointe Garden Society will wrap up its original timeslot before being replaced by Dateline. Then it’s off to Friday nights, where it’ll either grow some new roots—or wither away completely.

If the Peacock numbers keep rising, this could be less of a demotion and more of a pivot. But if the linear ratings don’t budge? Well, NBC’s garden club might not be renewing its membership for season two.

What do you think—does Grosse Pointe Garden Society deserve a second chance, or is this the beginning of the end?
