Nia DaCosta in Talks to Direct “28 Years Later” Trilogy’s Second Installment

Nia DaCosta, the director behind “Candyman” and “The Marvels,” is in discussions to helm the second installment of the “28 Years Later” trilogy, alongside renowned filmmakers Danny Boyle and Alex Garland.

The “28 Years Later” trilogy is a continuation of the iconic zombie horror franchise that began with “28 Days Later” in 2002, followed by “28 Weeks Later” in 2007. The original film, directed by Boyle and written by Garland, followed the story of a man who wakes up from a coma to find London deserted, only to discover that the city has been overrun by zombies following the outbreak of a deadly virus.

Boyle is set to direct the first film of the trilogy, with Garland penning the scripts for all three installments. The second film, for which DaCosta is in talks to direct, aims to build upon the tense and immersive atmosphere established in the original “28 Days Later.”

While plot details for the new trilogy remain scarce, the involvement of DaCosta brings fresh perspective and anticipation to the project. Her previous work in the horror genre, particularly with “Candyman,” has garnered critical acclaim and also marked her as the first Black female director to debut at the top of the U.S. box office charts.

Most recently DaCosta helmed “The Marvels” and her upcoming projects, includie the reimagining of Henrik Ibsen’s “Hedda Gabler.” DaCosta made her feature debut with the critically acclaimed “Little Woods,” which she wrote and directed.
