Production Wraps on ‘A Different World’ Sequel Series as Four More Added to Cast

Netflix has officially wrapped production on its sequel series to A Different World, filming in Atlanta, Georgia. The new chapter returns to the iconic fictional HBCU Hillman College, introducing a new generation of students while expanding the legacy of the original series with both returning favorites and new additions.

At the center of the latest casting announcements are Karen Malina White and Ajai Sanders, reprising their beloved roles as Charmaine Brown and Gina Deveaux. Their return marks a deeper reconnection to the original Hillman universe, as the sequel revisits characters whose stories once lived in the margins of the classic series.

They are joined by Cliff “Method Man” Smith and Norman Nixon Jr., who step into key new roles as the Hillman world expands.

Their inclusion adds new academic and athletic energy to Hillman while bridging the past and present of the beloved campus.

Behind the Camera: Continuing the Legacy

The 10-episode single-camera comedy is led by showrunner, writer, and executive producer Felicia Pride, who continues the Hillman legacy through a modern lens while honoring its cultural impact.

Debbie Allen returns to direct three episodes, including the premiere. Original series creators Reggie Rock Bythewood and Gina Prince-Bythewood also return as executive producers alongside Mandy Summers and Tom Werner.

Speaking about the wrap of production, Pride told Tudum:

“Reaching this point in the process to wrap production has been such a long time in the making. I can’t tell you how proud I am of the work that everyone — from our amazing cast to our awesome crew — has done and the creativity and heart that we have poured into this show. I am so excited for the world to see the magic we’ve been creating together.”

Continuing a Cultural Legacy

Originally debuting in 1987 as a spinoff of The Cosby Show, A Different World became one of television’s most defining portrayals of Black college life and HBCU culture. The series shaped conversations around identity, activism, love, and self-discovery for an entire generation.

Now, decades later, the Netflix sequel positions Hillman College once again as a living, evolving institution — where legacy students return, new voices emerge, and the past and present collide in real time.

With production now wrapped, Hillman is officially ready for its next chapter.
