Reinaldo Marcus Green to Direct Tiger Woods Biopic as Higher Ground Eyes Amazon MGM Project

Amazon MGM Studios is teeing up a major project—a Tiger Woods biopic—with King Richard and Bob Marley: One Love director Reinaldo Marcus Green at the helm. And in a powerhouse collaboration, Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company, Higher Ground, is in talks to produce.

The film is based on The Tiger Slam: The Inside Story of the Greatest Golf Ever Played by Kevin Cook, which dives into Woods’ rise from a child prodigy to a sports legend. Packed with firsthand accounts from caddies, coaches, and rivals, the story chronicles one of the most dominant eras in golf history—when Woods became the first and only player to hold all four major championship titles at once between 2000 and 2001.

Turning pro at just 20 years old in 1996, Tiger Woods didn’t just enter golf—he took over golf. With 15 major championship wins and 82 PGA Tour victories, he redefined the sport, shattering records and breaking barriers along the way. His 1997 Masters win, by the largest margin in tournament history, made him the first Black golfer to claim a major championship, forever changing the face of the game.

And while Woods’ later years have been marked by personal and professional setbacks—including injuries, scandal, and a near-fatal car accident—this film won’t be telling that story. Instead, under Green’s direction, it will laser in on his peak, showcasing the precision, intensity, and sheer dominance that made him a once-in-a-generation athlete.

The Tiger Woods biopic is part of Amazon MGM’s push into major theatrical releases, with plans to roll out 12 to 14 films per year starting in 2026. The studio seems to be angling for a prestige sports drama, much like Green’s King Richard, which earned Will Smith an Oscar and critical acclaim for its heartfelt, triumphant storytelling.

Higher Ground, which has made waves with projects like American Factory and Rustin, could bring the perfect mix of cinematic depth and cultural weight to Woods’ story. The company is known for backing stories that inspire and challenge the status quo, making it a fitting partner for a film about one of the most influential athletes of all time.

This isn’t the first time Woods’ story has hit the screen. HBO’s 2021 documentary Tiger explored both his rise and fall, offering a comprehensive look at his life inside and outside the sport. But with this new biopic, Amazon MGM is swinging for something different—a celebration of Woods at his peak, when he wasn’t just winning tournaments; he was redefining what was possible in golf.

No word yet on casting or a release date, but one thing’s for sure—this film is aiming for a perfect drive straight down the fairway.
