Disney’s Television Critics Association Press Tour, William Stanford Davis, known as Mr. Johnson in Abbott Elementary, revealed that the beloved comedy series has been officially renewed for its fourth season at ABC.
The renewal follows the highly anticipated Season 3 premiere, which faced delays due to last year’s strikes. Despite the setbacks, the premiere not only addressed the missed first half of the school year with a clever explanation involving camera crews but also featured some notable guest stars.
Abbott Elementary, created by and starring Quinta Brunson, has proven to be a hit for ABC. Season 2 achieved an impressive 3.56 rating among adults 18-49 in the 35-day viewing window, marking the network’s strongest season average for a comedy since the 2019-2020 season.
Adding to the series’ success, Quinta Brunson recently clinched the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her role in Season 2. The show boasts a stellar cast, including Tyler James Williams, Janelle James, Lisa Ann Walter, Chris Perfetti, William Stanford Davis, and Emmy winner Sheryl Lee Ralph.
Quinta Brunson, along with executive producers Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker of Delicious Non-Sequitur Productions, Randall Einhorn, and Brian Rubenstein, continue to guide the show’s creative direction.
The renewal announcement followed the return of the show’s strikes-delayed and supersized third season, which received positive ratings. Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich also confirmed renewals for other shows like Celebrity Family Feud and Jeopardy Masters, with hints of Dancing With the Stars returning for its 33rd season.
Abbott Elementary’s significance for ABC is evident as it becomes the first series renewed for the 2024-25 broadcast season. The show’s unique mockumentary format, set in a Philadelphia school, tackles relevant educational issues with humor and insight, contributing to its widespread appeal.
As Abbott Elementary continues to resonate with viewers, its Season 4 renewal reaffirms its standing as a cornerstone of ABC’s programming, promising more laughter and insightful storytelling in the episodes to come.
