After years of anticipation, the “Cruel Intentions” TV adaptation is finally becoming a reality. Previous attempts to bring the story to television, including a pilot ordered by NBC in 2016 with Sarah Michelle Gellar attached, did not come to fruition. However, this new series at Amazon promises to revive the captivating and seductive world of the original film.

Phoebe Fisher and Sara Goodman serve as the writers and executive producers of the series, with Neal H. Moritz, Pavun Shetty, Andrea Iervolino, Monica Bacardi, and Bruce Mellon also executive producing. The collaboration between Sony Pictures Television, Amazon Studios, and Original Film ensures the production of the Cruel Intentions series reboot.

The original “Cruel Intentions” film, released in 1999, gained significant attention and became a cult classic. Directed by Roger Kumble, the movie was a modern adaptation of the French novel “Les Liaisons dangereuses” by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos.

The story revolves around a group of wealthy and manipulative teenagers in New York City’s elite social circles. It follows the complex and twisted relationships between step-siblings Kathryn Merteuil (played by Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Sebastian Valmont (played by Ryan Phillippe). They engage in a game of seduction and manipulation, targeting innocent victims and playing with their emotions for their own amusement.

The film also starred Reese Witherspoon as Annette Hargrove, a virtuous and intelligent young woman who becomes the object of Sebastian’s seduction. Selma Blair portrayed Cecile Caldwell, an innocent and naive girl caught in Kathryn’s manipulative schemes.

“Cruel Intentions” captivated audiences with its dark and provocative themes, exploring the corruptive power of wealth, privilege, and desire. The film garnered praise for its stylish direction, strong performances, and memorable soundtrack, which included the iconic song “Bittersweet Symphony” by The Verve.

At the box office, “Cruel Intentions” achieved commercial success, grossing over $75 million worldwide. It continues to be celebrated for its unique take on the teen drama genre, capturing the intrigue and moral ambiguity of its characters.
