Issa Rae is joining the Marvel Universe. The multi-hyphenated Rae joins the cast of the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel as Jessica Drew aka Spider-Woman.
Plot details are being kept hidden but the sequel will continue to feature an array of Spider-characters drawn across Marvel Comics’ time and space.
What we know about Spider-Woman is that in the comics she grew up in the area of Wundagore Mountain, which is within the fictional country of Transia. Her parents were scientist used the rich veins of uranium found in Wundagore for their various scientific experiments. The radiation, however, poisons poor Jessica, which leads her parents to radically intervene to save her life by, among other things, injecting her with a serum made from, yup, arachnid blood.
At one point Drew becomes a Hydra agent and then an Agent of SHIELD and officially took the title Spider-Woman. However because details of the film are being tight-lipped, we will have to wait to see how they portray Spider-Woman.
What we do know is that most of the cast from the first film are expected to reprise their roles. Shameik Moore returns as main hero Miles Morales and Hailee Steinfeld is reprising her role as Gwen Stacy, a.k.a. Spider-Gwen.
Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Power, and Justin K. Thompson are directing Spider-Verse 2. Phil Lord and Chris Miller are penning the sequel along with David Callaham.
Lord and Miller will also produce the project like they did the first one along with Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Christina Steinberg. Alonzo Ruvalcaba is co-producing.
Peter Ramsey, who was one of the directors of the first movie, is returning as an executive producer, alongside Aditya Sood.
The sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is scheduled for release October 7, 2022.
