‘Street Fighter’ Trailer Drops Ahead of October Release, Teases 1993-Set World Warrior Tournament

The Street Fighter movie is officially stepping into the arena this fall. Universal’s CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas debuted the first trailer for the upcoming live-action adaptation, confirming a theatrical release date of October 16.

Directed by Kitao Sakurai (The Eric Andre Show) from a screenplay he co-wrote with T.J. Fixman, the film brings Capcom’s iconic fighting game franchise back to the big screen with a new ensemble cast and a 1993 setting that leans into the original game’s era.

The story follows estranged fighters Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo), who are pulled back into combat when Chun-Li (Callina Liang) recruits them for the World Warrior Tournament. What begins as a global fighting competition quickly escalates into something far more dangerous, as a hidden conspiracy forces the fighters to confront not only their opponents—but their pasts as well.

The film features a stacked cast of fighters and familiar franchise characters, including Joe “Roman Reigns” Anoa’i as Akuma, David Dastmalchian as M. Bison, Cody Rhodes as Guile, Andrew Schulz as Dan Hibiki, Eric André as Don Sauvage, Vidyut Jammwal as Dhalsim, Orville Peck as Vega, Olivier Richters as Zangief, Hirooki Goto as E. Honda, Alexander Volkanovski as Joe, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson as Balrog, and Jason Momoa as Blanka.

The trailer highlights the scale of the tournament, fast-paced fight sequences, and a tone that leans into the franchise’s over-the-top energy. The footage also teases rivalries, larger-than-life battles, and fan-favorite moves like Hadoukens, signaling a mix of nostalgia and high-intensity spectacle.

One of the more unexpected details revealed is the use of an unreleased version of “Ambitionz Az a Ridah” by Tupac Shakur, originally created for Mike Tyson in the 1990s, underscoring the film’s period-inspired approach.

With Sakurai at the helm and Legendary Pictures producing alongside Capcom, Street Fighter aims to bring the arcade fighting phenomenon back to theaters with a blend of action, camp, and character-driven rivalries.

Street Fighter arrives in theaters on October 16.
