Amazon MGM Studios just released the first look at The Accountant 2, the highly anticipated follow-up to the 2016 action-thriller The Accountant. The sequel will have its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival on March 8 before hitting theaters on April 25.
The film picks up years after the events of the original. Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck), the brilliant but deadly forensic accountant, is forced out of hiding when Treasury Agent Marybeth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) brings him in to solve a murder case. According to the official synopsis, Medina needs Wolff’s help after someone close to them is killed by unknown assassins. To track down the killers, Wolff enlists the help of his estranged brother Brax (Jon Bernthal), a highly skilled operative in his own right.
J.K. Simmons returns as Ray King, head of the Treasury Department’s financial crimes bureau. Gavin O’Connor once again directs, with Bill Dubuque penning the script.
The Accountant debuted in October 2016 and surprised many with its blend of action, intrigue, and a complex lead character. The film introduced Christian Wolff, a math genius with a troubled past who works as a forensic accountant for dangerous criminal organizations. His quiet life quickly spirals into chaos when the U.S. Treasury Department starts closing in on him, leading to a series of explosive events and unexpected twists.
Despite mixed reviews from critics, the film connected with audiences thanks to its intense action sequences, Affleck’s layered performance, and its portrayal of a protagonist on the autism spectrum—a rare depiction in the action genre. The Accountant earned $155 million worldwide on a $44 million budget, cementing itself as a sleeper hit. Its financial success, combined with strong home video sales and growing cult status, laid the foundation for this long-awaited sequel.
In The Accountant 2, the stakes are higher, the enemies deadlier, and Wolff’s family ties more critical than ever. Though several cast members from the original—like Anna Kendrick and Jeffrey Tambor—won’t return, the sequel promises fresh twists and intense action sequences.
Affleck also produced the movie through Artists Equity, his production company with Matt Damon, which has brought projects like Air and The Greatest Love Story Never Told to the big screen.
The Accountant 2 hits theaters on April 25.
