Tyler Perry’s The Six Triple Eight Becomes Netflix’s Most-Watched Perry Film, Boosts His Other Titles on the Platform

Tyler Perry’s latest Netflix release, The Six Triple Eight, has solidified its place as a record-breaking success. Garnering an impressive 52.4 million views within its first four weeks on the platform, the film not only marks Perry’s most-watched Netflix movie to date but has also given a significant boost to his other titles on the service.

Since the historical drama debuted on December 20, viewership for Perry’s previous Netflix projects—including Mea Culpa (2024), A Jazzman’s Blues (2022), A Madea Homecoming (2022), and A Fall from Grace (2020)—has surged by more than 45%. Additionally, The Six Triple Eight reached the Top 10 in over 85 countries, making it the most globally successful film in Perry’s Netflix catalog.

This milestone aligns with Perry’s prolific output under his multi-year first-look deal with Netflix, which began in 2023. Known for his ability to turn around projects quickly, Perry’s deal was expanded last year to include original series like Beauty in Black, which dominated the Netflix TV chart in October, as well as faith-based films in collaboration with producer DeVon Franklin.

The Six Triple Eight, written, directed, and produced by Perry, shines a spotlight on the remarkable story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion—the first and only all-Black, all-female unit in the Women’s Army Corps to serve overseas during World War II. Tasked with sorting a three-year backlog of 17 million pieces of mail for U.S. soldiers in war-torn Europe, these 855 women completed their mission in just 90 days, delivering hope and connection under the battalion’s motto, “No Mail, Low Morale.”

The film, inspired by Kevin M. Hymel’s WWII History Magazine article Fighting a Two-Front War, stars Kerry Washington as Major Charity Adams, the battalion’s commanding officer. Ebony Obsidian portrays Lena Derricott King, whose personal story of love and loss deeply influenced Perry’s screenplay. The ensemble cast also includes Oprah Winfrey, Milauna Jackson, Kylie Jefferson, Sarah Jeffery, Pepi Sonuga, Shanice Shantay, and veteran actors Susan Sarandon, Dean Norris, and Sam Waterston.

Filmed in Atlanta and London with a reported $70 million budget, the movie stands as Perry’s most ambitious project to date. The production also features an original song, “The Journey,” performed by H.E.R. and penned by Diane Warren.

The story of the 6888th Battalion is one of resilience, breaking barriers of racism and sexism while contributing significantly to the war effort. In recent years, their contributions have finally received recognition, with President Joe Biden awarding the battalion the Congressional Gold Medal in 2022.

Perry was inspired to bring this powerful story to the screen after connecting with Lena Derricott King, a member of the battalion who passed away earlier this year at 100. King’s legacy, along with those of her fellow soldiers, is immortalized in The Six Triple Eight, offering viewers a chance to witness their extraordinary journey and the critical role they played in American history.

Beyond the success of The Six Triple Eight, Perry’s collaboration with Netflix continues to bear fruit, proving that his storytelling resonates deeply with audiences worldwide. With projects that range from historical dramas to faith-based films, Perry’s ability to highlight untold narratives cements his position as one of the most prolific creators in Hollywood.

For Netflix subscribers scrolling through their options, The Six Triple Eight isn’t just another film to watch—it’s a story that demands to be experienced.
