Emmy Award-winning Director Diego Hurtado de Mendoza and Academy Award® nominee Lisa Cortés present “The Space Race,” premiering on National Geographic on February 12, followed by streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.

This documentary spotlights Black astronauts like Guion Bluford, Ed Dwight, and Charles Bolden, showcasing their resilience in the face of social injustice. Directors Lisa Cortés and Diego Hurtado de Mendoza trace the journey of these pioneers, exploring their commitment to space exploration despite the challenges they faced on Earth.

From Captain Ed Dwight’s thwarted moon mission in 1963 to the echoes of civil unrest reaching the International Space Station in 2020, the film weaves a narrative of determination. It captures the collision of global events with the aspirations of Black heroes at NASA, turning Afrofuturism dreams into reality.

The film features Bluford, Bolden, Dwight, Victor Glover, Frederick Gregory, Bernard Harris, Leland Melvin, Arnaldo Tamayo Méndez, and Jessica Watkins. The Space Race documentary will shed light on their extraordinary contributions to space exploration. With a concise runtime, “The Space Race” educates and inspires, celebrating the achievements of Black individuals who defied societal barriers.

Produced by Alexandra Bowen, Aly Parker, Mark Monroe, Keero Birla, Lisa Cortés, and Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, and executive produced by Frank Marshall, Tony Rosenthal, Carolyn Bernstein, and Leland Melvin, the film offers a compelling look at history. It’s a journey through time, redefining our understanding of “the right stuff” and introducing new heroes for recognition.
