Mubi has dropped the official trailer for Lurker, the psychological cat-and-mouse thriller that made waves at Sundance and stars Archie Madekwe (Saltburn), Théodore Pellerin (Beau Is Afraid), and comedian-actor Zack Fox (Abbott Elementary). The film hits North American theaters on August 22, going up against Lionsgate’s Americana and Eden, a Ron Howard-directed thriller from Vertical.
Directed by Alex Russell—whose producing credits include the Emmy-winning Beef and The Bear—Lurker follows a 20-something retail clerk (Pellerin) who crosses paths with a rising pop star (Madekwe) and slowly wedges himself into the artist’s inner circle. But what begins as innocent admiration blurs into obsession, and the film spirals into a chilling meditation on fame, access, and danger.
The ensemble cast also includes Sunny Suljic (Mid90s), Havana Rose Liu (Bottoms), and Daniel Zolghadri (Y2K).
Described by Sundance critics as “a terrific blend of black comedy and psychological thriller,” Lurker marks Russell’s directorial debut and was one of the few buzzy titles to land a major distribution deal out of this year’s festival.
The film is produced by Alex Orlovsky, Duncan Montgomery, Galen Core, Charlie McDowell, Jack Selby, Marc Marrie, Francesco Melzi d’Eril, Olmo Schnabel—and Archie Madekwe, who also serves as a producer. Production companies include High Frequency Entertainment, MeMo, Arts & Sciences, TWIN Pictures, and Case Study Films.
After its Sundance debut, Lurker made its international premiere at Berlinale and will close out the New Directors/New Films festival in New York City.
