Amazon Studios has unveiled the trailer for their long-awaited documentary, “Maxine’s Baby: A Tyler Perry Story,” set to premiere on Prime Video on November 17.
This documentary offers an in-depth exploration of the remarkable life and career of the versatile Tyler Perry. Perry, a true multi-hyphenate with roles as a writer, actor, filmmaker, and media mogul, will be the focus of this upcoming film. “Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story” promises an intimate journey into his life, both his professional achievements and personal transformation, and it’s set to premiere on Prime Video this November 17th.
Directed by Gelila Bekele and Armani Ortiz, “Maxine’s Baby” holds special significance as it pays homage to Perry’s late mother, Willie Maxine Perry, a significant influence in shaping his identity. This project has been in the works for nearly a decade, granting unprecedented access to Perry’s world and untold stories. Beyond the glitter and fame of Hollywood, the documentary seeks to reveal Perry’s lesser-known struggles and victories, rooted in healing from childhood trauma and turning adversity into motivation.
Produced by Gelila Bekele, Jasmine K. White, and Asante White, Gelila Bekele, a well-known activist, documentary filmmaker, and model, takes the lead as director and producer through her Bekele Films banner. Notably, she is also the mother of Perry’s son. Her previous works, such as “Anbessa” and “MAi: Life Is Not Honey,” showcase her ability to portray poignant narratives and shed light on vital societal issues.
It’s worth mentioning that “Maxine’s Baby” is an independent project separate from Amazon’s recent collaboration with Perry on a four-picture deal. This deal includes original projects with Perry’s involvement as a writer, director, and producer. The documentary stands as a unique endeavor, providing a comprehensive view of Perry’s evolution as a father, artist, and media magnate, highlighting the importance of staying connected to one’s roots while reaching for new heights.
