Taraji P. Henson and Tyler Perry have claimed the top spot in streaming for the week of Jun 2 – 8 even with Straw releasing on the 6th. The new psychological crime drama on Netflix, knocked HBO Max out of its long-running #1 position on Samba TV’s Weekly Wrap Report.
This marks the first time in nearly four months that a non-Max title has led the chart — and it’s all thanks to a tense, character-driven story written, directed, and produced by Perry himself.
Straw stars Henson as a single mother whose desperation leads her into a bank with a gun, triggering a high-stakes standoff and psychological unraveling. The film features a stacked cast that includes Sherri Shepherd, Teyana Taylor, Glynn Turman, Sinbad, Rockmond Dunbar, Mike Merrill, and Ashley Versher.
Though the film has received mixed reviews — currently sitting at 50% on Rotten Tomatoes with a 74% audience score — it’s been a massive hit with viewers. Notably, Straw was shot in just four days, a testament to Perry’s fast-paced production model and his longstanding efficiency as a filmmaker under his multi-title first-look deal with Netflix.
Produced alongside Angi Bones and Tony Strickland for Netflix, Straw is yet another example of Perry’s ability to pull in top-tier talent and deliver high-impact projects that dominate conversation — and viewing hours — regardless of critical consensus.
What Else Is Streaming?
