Olivia Newman is directing based on a script written by Lucy Alibar. The film adaptation is set in a small Southern town in the mid 20th century. It centers on Kya (Daisy Edgar-Jones), a young woman who, abandoned by her family, raises herself all alone in the marshes outside of her small town. However, when her former boyfriend is found dead, Kya is thrust into the spotlight, instantly branded by the local townspeople and law enforcement as the prime suspect for his murder.
Where the Crawdads Sing is equal parts a haunting crime thriller and a moving coming-of-age story. It explores our universal yearning for connection and our formative first loves. It also explores ultimately how strong and resilient each of us is, no matter the obstacles standing in our way.
Regina, in her first major film role, will play Little Kya.
