Sixteen years after The Social Network chronicled the rise of Facebook, audiences are finally getting their first look at its highly anticipated follow-up.
Sony Pictures has unveiled the teaser trailer for The Social Reckoning, a companion piece to the 2010 Oscar-winning drama that turns its focus back to the social media giant, this time examining the whistleblower revelations that emerged as the platform matured into a global force.
The film stars Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White, Wunmi Mosaku, Betty Gilpin, Billy Magnussen, Bill Burr, and Jeremy Strong. Strong takes over the role of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, succeeding Jesse Eisenberg, who led the original film. Madison, fresh off her Oscar-winning turn in Anora, plays Frances Haugen, the real-life Facebook engineer who became one of the most prominent whistleblowers in tech history. White plays Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz, whose reporting alongside Haugen exposed the company’s internal research and decision-making and culminated in The Facebook Files, a 2021 investigative series revealing Facebook’s harmful effects on teens and its role in spreading misinformation.
Aaron Sorkin returns to the franchise as both writer and director, expanding his role after winning an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Social Network. When the trailer premiered at CinemaCon, Sorkin explained his reason for returning: “There isn’t a life that Facebook’s algorithm hasn’t touched, and that influence has shaped everything. So it’s time to say more.”
In the trailer, Madison’s Haugen tells a reporter she wants to “help Facebook, not hurt it,” while Strong’s Zuckerberg appears remorseless in court, declaring himself a “free speech absolutist” and asserting that when he says no, “that’s the end of the debate.”
The Social Reckoning is produced by Sorkin alongside Todd Black, Peter Rice, and Stuart Besser. Sony Pictures releases the film in theaters on October 9, 2026.
