Binge-Worthy Series: 28 New TV Shows to Not Sleep On

Method Man, Morris Chestnut, Phylicia Rashad, and more join Diarra Kilpatrick’s critically acclaimed Paramount+ series for its sophomore run

Diarra Brickland is back, and Detroit is not letting her rest. Paramount+ has unveiled the premiere date, full cast, and first look at season two of Diarra From Detroit, the critically acclaimed series created by, written by, and starring Diarra Kilpatrick. The eight-episode second season debuts July 29 with two episodes, followed by one new episode every Wednesday through September 9.

Season two finds Diarra attempting a hot girl summer that almost immediately goes sideways. What starts as a furniture recovery mission spirals into a triple homicide investigation, a citywide treasure hunt, a secret society, a Tubi movie, urban legends, gang warfare, and secrets buried beneath the city itself. Because of course it does.

Kilpatrick is joined by returning cast members DomiNque Perry, Bryan Terrell Clark, Jon Chaffin, Shannon Wallace, Phylicia Rashad, Harry Lennix, and Morris Chestnut in a guest role. The guest star lineup is stacked: Cliff “Method Man” Smith, Glynn Turman, Bokeem Woodbine, Amber Riley, Lil Rel Howery, Lovie Simone, Shoniqua Shandai, Dave Z Martin, Nicco Annan, Skilla Baby, Icewear Vezzo, Chris “CP” Powell, and Jude Demorest. Shandai joins as Diarra’s sharp-tongued cousin Raqueeba, while Martin plays Booker, a street-smart criminal whose world collides with Diarra’s in unexpected ways.

The show arrives off one of the stronger debut seasons in recent streaming memory. Rolling Stone called it “a murder mystery, a romance, a comedy and a star-making showcase.” Variety hailed it as “a hilariously chaotic P.I. drama with flair.” Deadline, Rolling Stone, and The Hollywood Reporter all named it among their top ten shows of the year. The series earned nominations from both the NAACP Image Awards and the Independent Spirit Awards, and Kilpatrick took home a Gracie Award for Actress in a Breakthrough Role.

Returning star Shannon Wallace, who plays Chris, was barely able to contain himself when asked about the new season in a previous BLEX interview. “I didn’t think it could get better, but it is better,” he said. “That girl is a genius.” Wallace noted that the creative team gave him considerably more room this time around. “There were so many things about Chris that were unexplored. They really let me play, and I’m very proud of what I specifically put on screen.”

The series is executive produced by Kilpatrick alongside Kenya Barris and Miles Orion Feldsott, who also serves as showrunner. It is produced by BET Studios and Khalabo Ink Society.

Season one of Diarra From Detroit is currently streaming on Paramount+.
