Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is set to star in and executive produce Netflix’s new series, “Man on Fire.” This announcement follows the series’ greenlight in March.
“Man on Fire” is an adaptation of A.J. Quinnell’s novels “Man on Fire” and “The Perfect Kill,” which are part of a five-book series. These books were previously adapted into a 2004 film starring Denzel Washington and an Italian film in 1987. Steven Caple Jr., recognized for his work on “Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts” and “Creed II,” will direct the first two episodes and serve as an executive producer.
Abdul-Mateen II will portray John Creasy, a former Special Forces Mercenary who battles intense PTSD. The series follows Creasy’s quest for redemption, which is disrupted when he is thrust back into a world of violence and conflict.
The eight-episode drama series boasts a talented production team. Kyle Killen, known for “Fear Street,” will be the writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Other executive producers include Arnon Milchan, Yariv Milchan, and Natalie Lehmann from New Regency Productions, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, and Tracey Cook from Chernin Entertainment, as well as Scott Pennington and Kyle Killen from Chapter Eleven. Additional executive producers are Steven Caple Jr., Ed McDonnell, Michael Polaire, and Stacy Perskie from RedRum.
Netflix’s adaptation of “Man on Fire” adds to a growing lineup of character-driven thrillers on streaming platforms. The series, which has been in development for several months, reflects Netflix’s strategy to tap into the popular thriller genre, as evidenced by the success of shows like “Jack Ryan” and “The Night Agent.”
Originally published in 1980, “Man on Fire” has enjoyed a long legacy, with its 2004 film adaptation achieving commercial success and critical acclaim. The film, directed by Tony Scott and starring Denzel Washington and Dakota Fanning, grossed over $130 million worldwide and reignited interest in Quinnell’s novels. This legacy continued with a Bollywood remake in 2006, featuring Sanjay Dutt.
“Man on Fire” is poised to captivate audiences once again with its intense storyline and compelling characters, promising a gripping viewing experience on Netflix.
