Sony Pictures Television has secured the rights to Yaa Gyasi’s celebrated novel “Transcendent Kingdom.” The novel, written by the Ghanaian-American author, is set to be developed by producer Yvonne Orji under her First Look Deal with Sony.

“Transcendent Kingdom,” Gyasi’s second novel, delves into the life of Gifty, a neuroscientist in training exploring the intricacies of depression and addiction through her study of behavior patterns in mice. The narrative intertwines Gifty’s current life in the Bay Area with her childhood experiences as a first-generation Ghanaian in rural Alabama. The story navigates her journey through science and spirituality as she seeks to comprehend the pain and struggles she has witnessed.

Yvonne Orji is set to spearhead the project. Orji, recognized for her role as ‘Molly’ in the hit HBO comedy series “Insecure,” has been actively expanding her portfolio. Her recent two-year, first-look deal with Sony Pictures Television positions her to develop a range of scripted dramas and comedies for various streaming and cable platforms.

Orji’s collaboration with Sony adds to her growing list of achievements, including her performances in films like “The Blackening” and “Vacation Friends 2.” She has also contributed to projects such as “Night School,” the Netflix animated series “My Dad the Bounty Hunter,” and the HBO Max reality series “My Mom Your Dad.” Orji’s creative prowess extends beyond acting, as demonstrated by her published book “Bamboozled by Jesus: How God Tricked Me into the Life of My Dreams” (2021), offering insights and humor drawn from her personal journey.

Yaa Gyasi, whose literary talents have garnered critical acclaim, brings a unique perspective to storytelling, blending cultural insights with universal themes. Her debut novel, “Homegoing,” received prestigious accolades, including the American Book Award and the National Book Critics’ Circle’s John Leonard Award.

With Sony Pictures Television backing the adaptation of “Transcendent Kingdom” and Yvonne Orji leading the production, audiences can anticipate a captivating exploration of Gyasi’s rich narrative on screen.
