Peacock is set to launch its upcoming original film, “If You Were the Last,” a sci-fi romantic comedy featuring Anthony Mackie and Zoë Chao. The highly anticipated film will make its debut on October 20, 2023.
The movie’s plot revolves around two astronauts, Adam, portrayed by Anthony Mackie, and Jane, brought to life by Zoë Chao, who find themselves stranded in a deteriorating space shuttle with dim prospects of rescue. As they face the looming uncertainty of their predicament, their conversations lead to a debate on whether their relationship should remain at a platonic level or evolve into something deeper.
Produced by Depth of Field, Pinky Promise & Storm City Films, “If You Were the Last” is notable for marking the directorial debut of Kristian Mercado. It was also recognized as a Narrative Spotlight Selection at SXSW 2023, signifying the film’s compelling storytelling and exceptional cinematic qualities.
The story unfolds three years into a NASA mission gone awry. Adam and Jane’s spacecraft is marooned in the vast expanse between Jupiter and Saturn, with little hope of rescue. To pass the time, they engage in heated discussions about their next steps. In a pivotal moment, Adam suggests that perhaps they should explore a deeper connection, prompting a lively debate on whether their future lies in friendship or something more profound.
The movie also stars Natalie Morales and Geoff Stults. Executive producers include Harrison Huffman, Will Greenfield, Angela Bourassa, Chris Weitz, and Paul Weitz, while the production team consists of Andrew Miano, Dan Balgoyen, Britta Rowings, Dennis Masel, Gabrielle Nadig, Jessamine Burgum, Kara Durrett, Jon Levin, and Sean Woods. Kristian Mercado takes the helm as the director, with Angela Bourassa as the screenwriter.
