Chef Dom Taylor, Winner of Netflix’s Five Star Chef, Dies Suddenly at 44

Dom Taylor, the celebrated British-Jamaican chef who won Netflix’s Five Star Chef and founded London’s acclaimed Caribbean restaurant The Good Front Room, has died suddenly at age 44. His restaurant confirmed the news in a statement on its website and Instagram. No cause of death has been shared.

“Dom was a visionary whose bold, joyful approach to celebrating the Caribbean cuisine of his childhood brought a fresh and exciting voice to London’s restaurant scene,” the statement read. “His passion, talent and generosity touched so many people, and his legacy will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him and experiencing his food.”

Taylor won Five Star Chef in 2023, a competition in which chefs competed for the chance to bring a fine-dining concept to London’s prestigious Langham Hotel. His winning concept, The Good Front Room, a modern Caribbean restaurant inspired by his great-aunt Myrtle’s home, became the hotel’s first Caribbean restaurant and received widespread acclaim. He later opened a permanent location in Dalston, East London.

Born to a Jamaican mother and Saint Lucian father, Taylor received classical training in French cooking before dedicating his career to elevating Caribbean cuisine in the British fine dining scene. His approach was deeply personal, rooted in family heritage and a desire to present the food of his childhood with refinement and pride.

Tributes from the culinary community poured in following the announcement. Five Star Chef judge Mike Reid wrote, “Dom Taylor was one of the good ones. What he built with The Good Front Room wasn’t just a restaurant. It was his heritage on a plate. He took Caribbean cuisine somewhere it had never been in this country, and he did it his way.” Fellow judge Ravneet Gill Taiano described Taylor as “instantly captivating” with “a real sparkle in his eyes,” adding that he was “on the brink of so many exciting things.” Podcaster Paul Brunson also paid tribute, saying, “I had never seen the food of my heritage presented with such refinement, imagination and care. It was profoundly moving to see Caribbean food elevated without surrendering any of its soul.”

The Good Front Room confirmed it will remain open to honor Taylor’s legacy and continue the work he was so passionate about. The restaurant asked that the privacy of his family be respected during this difficult time.
