Cynthia Erivo to Star as Jesus in ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ at the Hollywood Bowl

Cynthia Erivo Signs On for Lionsgate’s Action-Packed Thriller ‘Karoshi’

From Oz to the heavens, Cynthia Erivo is taking on another iconic role. The Tony-winning powerhouse has been tapped to play Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar this summer at the Hollywood Bowl.

Set to run from August 1-3, the production marks the return of the Bowl’s annual summer musical tradition, with Tony Award-winning choreographer and director Sergio Trujillo leading the production and Stephen Oremus serving as musical director and conductor. Additional casting will be announced later.

For those unfamiliar, Jesus Christ Superstar is the rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice that reimagines the final weeks of Jesus’ life through the eyes of Judas Iscariot. Originally released as a concept album in 1970 before hitting Broadway in 1971, the musical is known for its rock-infused score and modernized take on biblical events. It explores themes of faith, betrayal, and celebrity, with iconic numbers like “Gethsemane,” “I Don’t Know How to Love Him,” and “Superstar.”

Erivo isn’t new to the world of Superstar—back in 2020, she lent her vocals to the all-female concept album Jesus Christ Superstar: She Is Risen, where she played Mary Magdalene, singing “Everything’s Alright” and “I Don’t Know How to Love Him.” This time, she’ll take on the title role, performing classics like “Hosanna,” “The Last Supper,” and “Gethsemane.”

“Just a little busy this summer,” Erivo wrote on Instagram. “Can’t wait.”

The Hollywood Bowl’s 2025 summer season is packed with heavy hitters. Hugh Jackman will kick things off with a one-night-only Opening Night at the Hollywood Bowl gala on june 7, performing numbers from The Greatest Showman, The Music Man, and more. The event raises funds for the LA Philharmonic’s music education initiatives.

The season also boasts an impressive lineup of musical talent, including Diana Ross, John Legend, Cyndi Lauper, Juanes, Grace Jones, The Roots, Yo-Yo Ma, and more. LA Phil’s Gustavo Dudamel will also take the stage for his 16th and penultimate season before stepping into his new role at the New York Philharmonic in 2026.

As for Erivo, between Wicked hitting theaters in November and now Jesus Christ Superstar, it’s safe to say she’s having a divine year.
