After 3-Year Hiatus ‘Euphoria’ to begin production: Main Cast to Return for Third Season

Euphoria Set to Begin Production for Season 3 in January 2025

After a significant hiatus, HBO’s acclaimed series ‘Euphoria’ is gearing up to return to production. Filming for the third season of the Sam Levinson-created drama is scheduled to commence in January 2025, nearly three years after the season two finale in February 2022.

The delay, caused by the 2023 writers and actors strikes and additional time needed for script development, extended the gap between seasons to almost four years. Despite the long wait, HBO confirms that the principal cast, including Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, and Hunter Schafer, will reprise their roles.

Francesca Orsi, HBO’s executive vice president of programming, expressed her enthusiasm about the upcoming production. “We could not be happier with our creative partnership with Sam and this incredible cast. We look forward to bringing this new season of Euphoria to life for the fans,” Orsi said.

During the hiatus, many cast members have seen their careers flourish. Despite this, they are all set to return for the third season. However, fans will have to bid farewell to Barbie Ferreira, who said goodbye to her character, Kat, after season 2, and the late Angus Cloud, who died of an accidental overdose in July 2023.

The new season will feature a significant time jump, moving the characters beyond their high school years. This shift addresses both narrative progression and practical concerns about the aging cast. In an interview with Variety, HBO boss Casey Bloys confirmed the time jump, highlighting its role in refreshing the series.

When it last aired, Euphoria was one of HBO’s most popular series. Season two averaged over 16 million viewers across all platforms within 90 days of its premiere, a figure surpassed only by Game of Thrones at the time. The show’s return is highly anticipated, with fans eagerly awaiting new developments in the lives of their favorite characters.

Despite the lack of an official air date, the production start in January suggests that the new episodes might air by late 2025. This timeline gives hope to viewers that the long-awaited continuation of Rue’s journey will be worth the wait.

Sam Levinson has hinted at a darker, more mature tone for the upcoming season, describing it as a “film noir.” This new direction will explore deeper themes and character developments, promising an evolved storyline for Zendaya’s Rue and her peers.

Euphoria, set in the fictional town of East Highland, California, delves into the lives of teenagers grappling with love, loss, and addiction. The series, based on an Israeli show created by Ron Leshem and Daphna Levin, has received critical acclaim for its raw portrayal of contemporary issues.
