Raphael Thomas didn’t choose the safe road, he just kept choosing the right one. A full-ride graphic design student at St. John University who quietly built a career dancing alongside Kelly Rowland, Sevyn Streeter, and more before most people knew his name. He didn’t make the Chris Brown tour that first time. He made something better. And then he just kept going.
Eleven years in Los Angeles later, Thomas has performed for Beyoncé, toured with Taylor Swift for nearly two years, and continues to elevate his dance career into film with the latest Michael Jackson biopic Michael, and danced on a music video for a song, “Human Nature,” that never had one until now. He’s also a visual artist with work currently showing in Pasadena, a budding filmmaker with a short in development, and someone who will tell you, without hesitation, that none of it feels real.
In this conversation, Raphael talks about what it actually takes to survive in a room full of greatness — not just the talent, but the quiet, the work ethic, the relationships, and the willingness to show up even when you’ve fumbled the bag. He talks about injuries, sleeping outside in North Hollywood, almost blowing the audition of his career, and what it felt like the first time that specific crowd roar from the stage.
This is a story about full circle moments. There are several.
